Craiceann on Inisheer, Bodhran Festival
Unfortunately the Craiceann Summer School 2021 and 2020 was cancelled due the Covid 19 pandemic.
The Craiceann Summer School or Bodhran Festival, which first began in 2001, returned to Inis Oírr (Inisheer) in 2019 for another great week of music making. Mícháel O’hÁlmháin who originally came up with the concept wanted to link the musical heritage of the Aran Islands with the need for improving the drumming skills of bodhran players. And so, from there a unique summer school for musical skill building was born.
Participants come from all parts of the world to attend this fantastic experience. In 2017 teaching team included will include Siobhán O’Donnell, Aimee Farrell-Courtney, Martin O’Neill, Cormac Byrne, Jim Higgins, Colm Phelan, Robbie Walsh and Rolf Wagels. There are three workshops which take place in between classes. The lectures will be given by Mícháel O’hÁlmháin, Stevie Moises (tipper maker, drummer and bodhrán player), and Professor Mel Mercier (Chair of Performing Arts at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in Limerick). Special lectures and demonstrations will be on subjects such as Bodhran History, Bodhrán Making, Irish Dancing, Lilting, Bones Playing, Sean-Nos Dancing.
Stevie Moises will bring his mobile lathe and a selection of woods, and will be working in his workshop during the week. He will be available for chats and tipper talk. Bodhrán maker Christian Hedwitschak will bring a selection of drums and he will also be available during the week.
Two fantastic concerts will be held by Donal Lunny and friends, and by Ímar- the up and coming band!
